Before deciding what my first post should be about, I thought it would be sensible to do some light research on what a first blog post should entail.
Starting this blog was a personal decision, but it would be nice to know the best ways to share my joy with others.
So, I did what all great philosophers do – I opened Google.
Write a brief outline of who you are
Nice and easy. The name is Mikey.
Technically it’s Michael, but I’ve grown tired of being the 15th Michael in the workplace. I’m based in London. I love music, mainly R&B, and I like learning things about the music industry (You see the rhyming pattern? Look at me giving you creativity after a few sentences). I don’t like attention. I’ve never watched The Godfather. I believe in therapy. I think sparkling water should be illegal. I complain about things I partake in. I’m an overthinker. I have many contradictory thoughts. For example, I feel like I should be doing better at this stage in my life, but at the same time I’m happy with what I’ve achieved. I think I’m currently in love, but also not sure what love is. I feel I have a lot to give, but I don’t enjoy being open. I love being a father but parenting is difficult. The list goes on. You’ll learn more about me in due time.
“Tell them why you started a blog”
I find writing therapeutic.
I had a blog many many years ago. Life made me give it up. I want to start again.
I’ve noticed that people enjoy the things I write
I also enjoy the things I write
“What will you be writing about”
Truthfully, I have no idea. I’m not even sure of which aspects of my life I’m comfortable sharing yet. That said, I will likely have opinions on current events, wellbeing and lifestyle observations, and some thought-provoking stuff… I may even sprinkle in some reviews on music, restaurants, locations and the like. For now, however, I’m just taking it one post at a time.
“Why should people read it”
You may just might like it. Who am I to tell you not to give it a try? (Besides the person who should be telling you to give it a try)
I just finished reading another Google article and apparently first posts don’t matter. Looks like I just need to introduce the blog and get to the real content asap. Google can’t tell me what to do though, so let’s keep this going.
Launching my blog on Valentine’s Day was entirely coincidental but Happy Valentine’s Day to those who are celebrating the day nevertheless. One of my earliest memories of Valentine’s Day involved a group trip to the cinema with my then girlfriend (I think - I may have made that up) and her friends. I must’ve been about 16 or something. As I was approaching the cinema, I saw my girlfriend in the distance with her friends and they all had some form of valentines gift already. Evidently, I didn’t get the memo because all I turned up with was money for tickets and popcorn. So I did a U-turn, quickly got a gift, and acted like I had it planned for months. I’m not sure why I remember this story because I don’t even remember what we watched. It may be It’s definitely because I used my popcorn money on a rose and a teddy bear, and my heart refuses to heal.
Whilst I’m on the topic of difficult decisions, I wouldn’t be a pastor’s son if I didn’t also acknowledge Ash Wednesday. The irony of two holidays with opposite purposes on the same day. I know there’s a pastor somewhere cooking up a serious message. I’ve not really thought about things to “give up” for lent but getting this blog going is probably my first steps in refusing to procrastinate. Let’s see how it goes…
My plan is to attempt to update this blog every Wednesday. If you would like to receive a notification whenever I upload an article, click the subscribe button or message me on my socials with your email and I’ll add you to the mailing list. This will send a copy of anything I post directly to your email.
Though it may seem like I know what I’m doing, Substack is very new to me. Please bear with me while I slowly build an empire of thoughts.
Til next Wednesday,
Mikey
Happy Valentines Ash Wednes Day
